Lantra Awards Technical Award in Safe Use of Pesticides – Northern Ireland
Summary:
Pesticides are very widely and successfully used in land-based industries, but they can be potentially harmful substances, therefore it is essential that they are handled, applied and stored correctly. This therefore makes training essential and our Safe Use of Pesticides attendance course will guide you through the key elements of using pesticides safely, and with confidence.
Target audience:
Our one day training course is for you if you are employed within the agriculture or horticulture industries, and if you are responsible for the storage, handling and application of pesticides. This course will help you develop your knowledge of health and safety and legislation enabling you to work safely and effectively out in the field.
Description:
Our Safe Use of Pesticides – Northern Ireland – attendance course will guide you through the key elements of using pesticides safely, and with confidence.
Product objectives:
On completion of the course you will be able to:
- Understand your duties under the law and help you become a safe and competent pesticide user.
- Understand what pesticides are and their ‘field of use’.
- State legislation relevant to pesticide application.
- Interpret and use label information.
- Take the appropriate action to protect themselves and the environment.
- Store and transport pesticides safely.
- Dispose of the pesticides and containers safely.
- Record information.
The use of the Northern Ireland Code of Practice for Using Plant Protection Products and pesticides labels is stressed at all times to ensure compliance with the Control of Pesticides Regulations.
The Northern Ireland code of practice specifies the knowledge and skills required of a competent operator.

Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Vehicle Mounted Boom Sprayer Equipment
Summary:
The Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Vehicle Mounted Boom Sprayer Equipment has been developed in direct response to a legal requirement for users to hold a recognised specified Certificate before using pesticide products to protect plants and crops from pests and diseases, and for the control of unwanted plants/weeds. From 26 November 2015, anyone who is purchasing a pesticide authorised for professional use must ensure the product will be used by someone who holds a specified Certificate or who will be working under the direct supervision of someone who holds one. A specified Certificate is one which relates to the relevant use of the product being purchased.
This qualification has been developed for individuals involved in a variety of roles in the safe use and application of pesticides using vehicle mounted boom sprayer equipment. It provides the opportunity to achieve a recognised qualification which reflects the national standards for the type of role(s) they perform. This qualification will be suitable for those entering work, those who have established themselves in a role and those working at technician/supervisory/management levels.
This qualification is available for learners aged 16+ wishing to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the safe use and application of pesticides using boom sprayer equipment.
Description:
The qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills to support their role(s) and develop their career in the protection of plants and crops from pests and diseases, and controlling unwanted plants and weeds. It also provides an opportunity for learners to obtain a specified certificate, without which they would not be able to carry on working with pesticides. The qualification will enhance the ability of personnel to work safely, effectively and efficiently in the workplace, reducing unnecessary risks to themselves and others.
Product objectives:
The qualification aims to assess the learner’s knowledge and understanding and competence in:
- the regulations regarding safe use of pesticides
- pesticide product information
- hazards and risks associated with pesticides
- personal safety when using hand held equipment
- the measures to deal with pesticide poisoning
- safe working practices
- the requirements for protected areas
- environmental risks and protection of wildlife
- how to deal with incidents
- factors to consider when using pesticides with vehicle mounted boom sprayer equipment
Product purpose:
Following regulatory requirements for qualifications to have a distinct purpose, this qualification is identified and approved with Ofqual to have the following:
- Purpose: D Confirm occupational competence and/or ‘licence to practice’
- Sub purpose: D2 Confirm the ability to meet a ‘licence to practice’ or other legal requirements made by the relevant sector, professional or industry body.
Course: Level 2 Qualification (one day training followed by 2-3 hour assessment on subsequent day)

Lantra Awards Rodent Control on Farms
Summary:
This course approved by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) Training and Certification Working Group is designed to help people plan and carry out rat and mouse control in an agricultural setting. It is intended to provide a full working knowledge of both preventive and curative methods to be able to plan, implement and monitor a control programme that is appropriate to the situation, assessing and using the most efficient and safe methods and with due regard to the environment. This course provides an opportunity to gain an industry recognised certificate that will be a requirement for users from June 2016. It is the responsibility of anyone carrying out rodent control to be familiar with the relevant legislation concerning the humane and effective management of rat and mouse problems. Whilst guidance is given during the course on the main legislation and its relevance to rodent control, it is essential that those engaged in pest control should keep up to date with changes in legislation that may affect pests or pest control.
Target audience:
Our comprehensive training is for anyone who wishes to control rodents and undertake pest control predominantly in land-based or related industries. This course provides an opportunity to gain an industry recognised certificate that will be a requirement for users from June 2016.
Description:
The training will include theory and practical activities during the day and provide you with an understanding of why it is necessary to control rodents, the biology and behaviour of rodents and legislation associated with rodent control. You will understand what information is required when carrying out a survey and the non-chemical methods available to control rodents as well as the current rodenticides and formulations how they work, how to transport them, safe disposal and the importance of completing documentation. This training is suitable to anyone new to rodent control or wishing to develop their skills further in rodent control.
